| ANDREW HILLAndrew Hill was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, in 1964. He began his studies at Nelson and Colne College, then went on to Derby Lonsdale College. The main influence on his work is pottery from the Sung dynasty China, widely acknowledged as one of the finest eras in ceramics worldwide, due to its simplicity and purity of form. The technique he uses is Raku, originally used for vessels in the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Raku is a special technique where the red hot pots are taken straight from the kiln and placed into sawdust, which ignites, crackling the surface of the glaze of the pot. Andrew Hill's pots take on remarkable colours from the use of leaves and ferns in this process. Because of Raku's slow conduction rate, the Japanese favoured the process as tea bowls could be held comfortably in the hand. Now, however, it is appreciated for its artistic qualities of surface and texture. Each pot is thrown, turned and biscuit fired in a conventional manner. It is then sprayed with a copper glaze. Spraying is to ensure an even coat and prevention of ‘crawling’. The final firing takes place in a cylindrical kiln using propane gas to a temperature of 850-900oC. Depending on the size of the pot, this would generally take about 45 minutes. The pot is soaked at this temperature for approximately 15 minutes, held in the air for about ten seconds, and then placed in sawdust for a heavy reduction. The air cooling in the process helps to develop the full range of colour and texture that makes Raku so exciting and individual.
