DAVID WHITE
David White ( Born 1934 - Died 2011) works predominantly in porcelain, creating pieces that have a distinctive fine crackle over subtle colourings.
These surface patterns are achieved using a range of glazes produced specially by David for the specific effects they create. The different tensions between glazes cause them to crack on cooling, and range from ones that readily crack to give a fine crazing, to those that do not crack at all. These are then blended by spraying to achieve contrasting areas of fine and open crackle. Colour is achieved by adding oxides and underglaze colours to a reluctant glaze. As many as five different glazes can be applied to one pot, and David will re-glaze and re-fire if necessary, until he is satisfied that the crackling on a pot is successful. On cooling the pieces are coated in a carbon-based ink which is then washed off immediately, creating pots of a remarkable subtlety and refinement.
Born in Kent in 1934, David White attended the Royal College of Art in 1956-59, attaining First Class Hons. In 1960, he was joint winner of the Duke of Edinburgh's award for Elegant Design, and his Design of the Year is on permanent display at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Between 1959 and 1983, David White founded and managed two pottery companies, producing hand thrown domestic ware. Since then, he has worked from home producing individual pieces in porcelain for Galleries.
Since his first one-man show in 1985 in London, David White has had a number of prestigious exhibitions of his work.
