JOHN HAMMOND
John Hammond studied at Wimbledon Art College before going on to graduate from the renowned Bath Academy of Art in 1982. At this time his land and seascapes, which he exhibited in the south west, were executed predominantly in water colour.
As his career developed the shift to his now preferred medium of acrylic was an inevitable result of his increasing desire to manipulate and rework the picture surface itself. He has taken this medium and made it his own, using the heaviest of impasto marks with the most subtle of transparent glazes to build layers of depth and texture into his paintings.
From his Wiltshire based studio John travels widely, painting both here and abroad. John now has many highly successful solo exhibitions to his name, his work has been featured in a number of publications over the years and is keenly collected, and is included in private and corporate collections. He exhibits in London and with select regional galleries, and has shown with The Bath Society of Artists, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts having been awarded a prize in their inaugural Open Exhibition.
John’s inspiration to paint comes from an emotional response to the visual world. Subject matters are not so much sought as found; landscape seascapes and cityscapes encountered at home and abroad are embraced with equal enthusiasm. These seemingly disparate themes are for him united by his desire to understand, distil and convey their unique quality of light and atmosphere, with the aim of creating for the viewer an environment as compelling and absorbing as his own first hand experience.
