RICHARD WILSON
Richard Wilson was born and brought up in Norwich and has been making pots since the early 1970s. After studying for two years at Great Yarmouth College of Art, he worked from 1974 to 1980 at Le Dieu Pottery in Norwich before travelling to Australia, New Zealand and later Germany, where he worked with many potters using different techniques.
The strongest influences on his work have been the Cardew tradition of English country pottery (he spent some months working at Wenford Bridge in the 1980s) and experiences gained during four years in Germany. Here he learned the skill of woodfiring stoneware and was inspired by the richness of design in traditional European slipware.
Richard is a member of the Westcountry Potters Association, and the Dorset Pottery group, participating in exhibitions and other events organised through both these organisations, which promote the sharing and development of different techniques of firing and making pottery. He is also a member of the Craft Potters Association.
Richard set up his own workshop in Dorset, in 1990, and now produces a wide range of pottery in both earthenware (fired to 1100oC) and high-fired stoneware. He decorates his pots in bright colours, using traditional slipware methods.
