Living by the sea near Southend, the local fishing vessels and boating life has become a focal point for my work.
With a background in design I am conscious of balance, shape, surface texture and colour. Each piece is individually hand-built from slabs of crank or buff clay. To achieve a natural quality I stretch, tear and texture the soft and leather-hard clay using found objects, some gathered from my daily walks on the beach.
Oxides and coloured slips are then applied to enhance this detail and character not only to bring out the aged appearance but to capture the ‘lived in and loved’ quality of each boat. ( Bisque fire 1150, glaze 1050 ). The translucent glazes I use retain any underlying features and indentations and matt glazes enforce this weathered effect. Silver wire on the larger pieces or linen thread is added to suggest rigging.
Finally, every piece whether sail boat, tug or racing yacht is given a name inspired either by its shape, colour or character. I enjoy the playful quality of clay and aim to retain this element of fun in my work, now and in the future.

SHIPPING / POST: smaller items charged at COST

Royal Mail’s 1st Class, Recorded Delivery or Special Delivery are usually used within UK depending on value and insurance required.

SHIPPING / POST: larger items + International Deliveries

UPS (United Parcel Service) is used for larger items within UK and abroad.

This service is usually TRACKABLE and requires a signature upon receipt of goods. (This service has proved 100% reliable for us.)

Insurance, if required, is charged at 1% of value.

Price example - £ 12.50 up to 30kg for delivery next working day within UK

Shipping charges are priced at COST. If special packaging is required (e.g. wooden boxes or picture crates), this can be discussed at time of purchase and is charged at a nominal rate.
